Ed Said - Did you know this was the end

When the first issue of the Mangawhai Focus saw the light of day almost 10 years ago, Jo Roberts was visiting family in Canada, as I recall. She wished us well before she flew out and, shortly after her return, offered to pen local snippets of news initially on a monthly then later, the current bi-monthly basis.

Did You Know

Signing off…
This is the last 'Did You Know?' column from me, one I have enjoyed putting together since the Focus began. After 10 years, I'm sure the time is right for a change! This 'Facebook for the Senior Generation' snippet currently circulating on the internet perhaps says it all:

Museum handover now official

March 19, 1970 saw the first meeting of the Mangawhai Heritage Society was convened. In 1986 funding for a new concrete block building was granted from the Endowment Fund and officially opened in 1987. In 1989 the Louis Wintle extension was added with the Te Arai Library building shifted to the site in 1991.

Rates march not rated

Mangawhai is far from being the only district with rating issues. Aucklanders, too, have been up in arms after receiving demands for the first instalments of a projected average 9.9 percent rates increase imposed by their council, though darts are being directed specifically at Mayor Len Brown.

Northlanders enthusiastic about prospect of better broadband, cellphone coverage

Nearly 1500 people responded to a recent survey as part of Northland’s bid for a share of up to $360 million in Government funding to extend high-speed broadband.

Worzels World - Time warp inversions and relativity

I glimpsed him one morning in dim light, through a cobwebbed dusty window, my eyes still bleary from sleep. A dodgy looking bloke about 10 or 12 years my senior.

Guytons Garden - Heed advice of moon calendar

To ensure that I'm passing on useful and trustworthy advice to you, I consult various calendars that are purpose-made to assign gardening activity to the state of the moon. They make very interesting and sometimes contradictory reading.

Appeal time for MRRA

The hearing of the appeal by the Mangawhai Ratepayers & Residents Association (MRRA) against the court decision of February this year relating to legality or otherwise of rates charges and the decision that went against their claim is due to be heard this week.

Despite having the decision go against them at the earlier hearing in Whangarei, the MRRA are adamant they have strong grounds in terms of the law as a basis for their appeal.

Three senior bowlers – Gerry Mulligan, Neville Franks, Paul Freeman – took their annual bowling trip down to the Auckland and North Harbour greens recently. First up was a tournament at Bridge Park BC, Mangere Bridge, where they swept all before them winning the day. The second day was a day of bowls at Glendowie BC where they just got pipped for the win. A stopover at Mairangi Bay BC on the way back north they managed a close third.
