Guides walk the talk Volunteer guides gathered recently to attend a special Mangawhai Walking Weekend guide training workshop. There’s no monthly meetings for this lot, who get together only the once to prepare and plan for Mangawhai’s most logistically challenging event of the year.

Tsunami sirens chance to educate community Whangarei and Kaipara District tsunami sirens will be tested in coastal and harbour locations along the east coast from Bland Bay through to Mangawhai Heads on Sunday April 6 Sirens will sound for 10 minutes at 9.20am and again for 30 seconds at 10am. Their blue lights will flash throughout the period of the test.
Surf shop target of ram raid The usual tranquillity of Mangawhai was left a little shaken after the burglary of a Mangawhai surf shop in which a large amount of property was taken. A well-executed ram-raid was carried out on Bammas Surf Shop in the early hours of March 12 during which intruders stole a large quantity of sunglasses, men's board shorts, several body boards and a number of long-sleeve, high value wetsuits.

Wellsford Premiers go top of table Wharehine Wellsford are top of Northland Rugby’s Southern Districts Premier competition after three rounds, with a convincing 38-0 defeat of Hikurangi at Centennial Park on Saturday. Played in blustery conditions on a good surface, the game had a controversial opening with Hikurangi having to go to uncontested scrums after losing a front rower to injury in the third minute.

Museum to benefit from bowls fundraiser The Mangawhai Bowls Annual Men’s Fours Charity Tournament on March 29 and 30 boasts a $10,000 prize pool this year, with proceeds going towards construction of the new museum building.
Success for Mangawhai at home The Champion of Champions event for the season ended at the Mangawhai greens last weekend. Fifteen clubs competed in the mens section and the final between Mangawhai and Onerahi resulted in a win for Mangawhai and a first gold star for Paul Wightman.
Surf Queen off to World Champs A name well known to locals is Hannah Williams, who again shone throughout the competition showing her versatility at all levels and capping off a great season with two gold, three silver and two bronze medals and gaining her selection in the youth team squad of 12.
