Mangawhai butcher snags another gold
Mangawhai Meat Shop has won a gold medal at this year’s Devro Great New Zealand Sausage Competition, the country’s premier snarler sizzle-off that has been running in various forms since 1994.
Results were announced at an October 18 awards dinner in Auckland with the Mangawhai butchery taking out a gold medal for their Beef and Bean Mad Mex sausage in the Meat Free & Flexitarian category.
"There's a move towards less meat and we're always experimenting with new taste combinations," says Mangawhai Meat Shop owner Dan Klink, appearing last week on TVNZ’s Seven Sharp.
More than 90 butcheries from around New Zealand put their best snarlers forward culminating in over 500 sausages being poked, sniffed and tasted across 13 categories.
Five days of category judging by a squad of butchers, foodies, chefs and industry heavyweights, whittled entries down to the top scoring sausages.
“Even after all the judging we asked for more to be cooked… it’s all about the meat, perfectly textured with great use of seasoning that has an unforgettable luscious after-taste,” says food writer and judge Annabelle White.
Just a few months ago Dan also won the Alto Butcher of the Year regional final with his ‘flexitarian burger’.
Now is a great time to clean up the barbeque in readiness for summer so drop in to Mangawhai Meat Shop at the Village and get your hands on some award-winning snarlers.
