Baking comp heats up Hakaru
A tasty fundraiser involving sugar and spice and all things nice is being whipped up to help preserve an old local establishment and benefit a much-needed community service.
The Hakaru Hall Committee is putting out an invitation to all budding bakers willing to put their best baked goods forward for the associations first Hakaru’s Hottest Homebaker competition on September 17.
Social committee member and co-organiser Lorraine Hepple says while the event is initially a fundraiser and a promotion of the hall, the bake-off is also designed ‘for a bit of fun’.
“Our committee is trying to run functions throughout the year to bring the community together as well as fundraise for the hall’s up-keep,” she says. “The hall was built in 1926 and requires a bit of maintenance, it could tell many stories I'm sure.”
Proceeds from the bake-off will go towards upgrading the hall’s kitchen and will also be shared with the Kaiwaka Fire Brigade.
“We wanted to share the profits with a good local cause and were thinking of baking, ovens, kitchens… thought it was appropriate, they work so hard.”
Half a dozen ‘well-known’ local judges have been given the enviable task of taste-testing and not-so-enviable job of deciding the winners.
“Nothing will be wasted,” Lorraine says. “Non-competitors are welcome to attend and for five dollars can sample the baking and grab a cup of coffee or tea. People can also take some goodies home as the baking will be auctioned off.”
The committee plan on making the Homebaker competition an annual affair, adding to the range of events the hall currently hosts through the year including Zonta Club of Mangawhai’s Masquerade Ball, country weddings, local scout meetings and preschool play groups. Future fundraisers include a Trash and Treasure upmarket garage sale and Elvis shows.
Bake-off entry forms are available from Bammas, Mangawhai Village or Jaques Four Square, Kaiwaka and must be returned by September 14.
“Just want to say a big thank you to my future son-in-law, Chris Phillips, at Design Distillery for the lovely poster and entry form he designed and created.”
