Time to get growingDays are growing longer, daylight saving is not far away, and we need to be preparing our plantings for the summer.
More and more people are experiencing the benefits of eating raw foods, fruits and vegetables. The less processed the food, the better it is for you. One rule of thumb is that the closer a food is to it's natural state the better it is for you. When foods aren't processed at high heats and changed from their natu-ral states, they are more easily recognised as foods by the body and therefore processed well through the digestive system. There is a higher nutritional value in raw foods which are often packed with vitamins and minerals that are essential to good health. Now that we are moving onto the warmer months of the year it's a perfect time to start a garden and eat fresh from it. Look for heirloom seeds that you can grow and then save seeds from your produce for the next seasons planting. When starting your seed raising, get good organ-ic potting mix and put into seed raising pots. Make a small well in the soil and add one or two seeds to the soil covering the seed with soil. Water regularly but don't over-water and put in a warm, sheltered spot. When plant has grown to a certain size, about 3cm tall, place the seed tray in a more exposed place so your plants can 'harden off' before planting into an open garden bed. Sprinkle organic slug bait around so that plants can get established without receiving any knock-backs or being eaten by insects. Sunshine Organics stocks a wide range of organ-ic seeds, organic compost and organic slug and snail bait. Online at www.sunshineorganics.co.nz |
