Spring has Sprung theme of latest exhibitionThe Originals Art Group will be exhibiting at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery from September 24 to October 7. The ‘Spring has Sprung’ exhibit includes an eclectic mix of styles and media as stated by one of the two leaders, Jean Fountain. She and Linda Foster share the general running of the group and organising the exhibitions, workshops, art library and morning tea.
The group is rapidly expanding and everyone is welcome. They encourage absolute beginners through to very experienced artists, all ages and one gentleman suggested they could do with a few more men to balance the numbers. There is a small weekly fee to cover the hall costs and special events and participants bring their own materials. As I wandered around, I noticed the atmosphere was congenial and fun. Everyone stated that the environment is friendly, supportive and nurturing. There is plenty of advice and help available but also the space to work individually. Ailsa is a painter and she loves the group critique at the end which she says is fun and helpful. Raewyn is a quiller on line drawings and says she has learned a lot of skills and loves the companionship. Janine enjoys the encouragement and advice available and works in pastels and electronic media. Shirley said it was great for people who were new to the district and that there were some very talented people in the group. She has mixed media work. Andrea works with watercolour, and likes that it is not structured but you can get lots of ideas from others. Laraine was very encouraging to new members and said not to be shy, and to just come in and have a go. Margaret stated that painting is wonderful therapy and that singing is also possible. Gordon was working on a landscape commission and loves to sing and joke. Lastly, Pamela enjoys being with likeminded people and will be exhibiting acrylic paintings. All of the artists are looking forward to exhibiting at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery, located at 45 Moir St opposite Bennett’s. Everyone is welcome, 10am–3pm daily, so please come along to support your local artists. Check out mangawhaiartists.co.nz |
