Did You Know....... Out and about in Mangawhai with Jo Roberts

Superb sausages
Tried the award-winning Toulouse sausages made by Dan Klink at Mangawhai Meats Shop? Gold in the Continental Fresh category of the Devro New Zealand Sausage competition. Pick up the chicken, lime, and coriander sausage to try too.

Sandra’s pet services Sandra Staines has taken over Mangawhai Pet Services – dog walking, pet sitting, feeding, personal grooming, and animal recovery care. Hobby farm animals get good care and she's pretty good with alpacas, feet and all. Sandra comes to you, daily, or whatever is required. Keep the number handy, 431 5649.

Plenty to do in Mangawhai
Better set aside plenty of spending money for Labour Weekend, because there's plenty to see and do here in Mangawhai.

Start out early on Saturday and take the family to the annual Mangawhai Beach School Agriculltural & Gala Day. Calves, lambs, all manner of pets to admire, along with the games, side shows, entertainment, white elephant stalls, food, popular spin the wheel raffles – a fantastic day, and every dollar raised supports the top-class education the children receive here in Mangawhai.

Mangawhai Heads Surf Lifesaving Club has an Open Day on Saturday, old and new members can register between 11am and 4pm.

Seven Artists feature in an exhibi-tion at 60 Wintle St, from 10am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Entry is free, and apart fom the art works, you may even get to spot the dolphins that have been frequenting the harbour lately – the view from the exhibition space is that good!

And the local Hash House Harriers are having a Labour weekend run/walk on Saturday, meeting at 3pm at the Surf Club. This fun group say you can walk easy or run hard, they don't care as long as you put $2 in the bucket. For more information, you can contact Charlie "puffed out" Tutt on 0274448501.

There's the well-established Saturday morning Village Market, Ice Cream by Emily opens for the season at Bennetts, and there's a book clearance at St John Op Shop, with all books half price.

Early bird tickets for the Mangawhai Garden Ramble on November 8 & 9 can be purchased from Books & Gifts in Wood St or Fresh in the Village, for just $15. After Labour weekend, they will be $20.

Sunday morning 9am is the Beach and Country Market at the Domain. Free parking and free entry! Entertainment, stalls, car boot sales, food and produce – a great place to be from 9am - 1pm

Seven Artists exhibition continues at 60 Wintle St, 10am-5pm, and at the Surf Club, junior registration is at 10am.

Labour weekend Sunday, all books half price at St John Op Shop, open 10am -2pm.

Monday brings a special event, with the official opening of the Waterfall Track. Head up King Road and look for the sign at the T-junction. There will be plenty of parking available on the day and make sure you are ready by 10am. This track is quite an achievement for the track cutters of the Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust as it takes you up past numerous waterfalls to the old kauri dam where you can meet up with part of the Brynderwyn track and then on to the Tanekaka track to bring you back in a loop taking around 5 hours. There will be a guided walk on the day up to the kauri dam, so come suitably equipped with tramping boots etc.

New Pipi Gallery
Did you know the Smashed Pipi Gallery is soon to relocate and become The Pipi Gal-lery? Barbara Hock-enhull says they've decided to shorten the name as it won't fit on the new build-ing under construction! The smart new space, which includes an out-door sculpture garden, is alongside Barbara's residence, and could well be ready in early November.

Community grants
Grant applications to the Mangawhai Endowment Lands Account are now open. Any community organ-isation can apply for funding if the project benefits Mangawhai, there is a volunteer component, and the project meets the rel-evant criteria. Legendary blues man and songwriter, Hammond Gamble, is coming to Mangawhai for a solo acoustic performance at Sail Rock Cafe, Sunday November 9, 12.30pm. Should be a lovely afternoon as he will be playing some numbers from his new album Ninety Mile Days. Would pay to book so you don't miss out.

Flowers and crafts
A very rural event is the Mangawhai Women's Institute Floral & Craft Show, Friday November 21 in the library hall in the village. Part of the local calendar for over 60 years, judging includes cut flowers, vegetables, cooking, handcraft, art, photography and a childrens section. How about putting in an entry?
