Buzz in the Bay - News from Waipu and Bream Bay

Goodbye Puhoi, hello Waipu
Anthony and Lisa Uphof have been busy making their very own cheese using locally produced milk and have plans to build an artisan cheese fac-tory from their country home-stead ‘black sheep farm’ on Cove Road. It’s sure to be the best cheese Waipu can offer. Watch this space for more up-dates.

Speaking of Cove Road…
The former antiques bungalow opposite Pizza Barn is about to re-emerge as Waipu Natural Health Centre under the auspices of Jan Van der Lee. Previously working from home in Cullen Rd, Jan now brings her service to the peo-ple. The building is under-going a refurb, and is due to open mid-November. Services will include osteopathic treat-ment, pilates and general re-hab and consultation. Watch that space.

Your new favourite place to get great coffee with local artisan food
The Blackshed doors will be opening again on Labour Weekend.Come in for some early Christmas shopping, there are gorgeous baskets, ceramics and glassware that is begging to be filled with spring flowers. Of course, next door the ‘Little Red’ coffee cabin will open too. Grab a brew, it makes browsing much more enjoyable.

Tide’s Out Fun Run
Prices have dropped and tickets are selling. Get your walking gear on and head to the beach on November 2 for the Tide’s Out Fun Run at Ruakaka Beach, followed by live music from budding Bream Bay College musicians. Just $15 for adults and $5 for school age children or go to breambayfunrun.com for more info.

Ruakaka Skate Park
The pegs are in the ground and the dream is becoming a reality. The Ruakaka skate park is estimated to cost about $55,000 and really needs lo-cal support. Look out for the Givealittle page coming soon and find out how you can help sponsor or go to facebook. com/RuakakaSkatePark to catch up on updates. There is also a local sponsorship op-tion where people can 'buy' a square metre of concrete for $200. Any sponsorship over this amount will be rec-ognised on the skate park Fa-cebook page, in local papers, and also in the new recrea-tion centre building on a spon-sors wall. Pledge online at givealittle.co.nz/cause/ruaka-kaskatepark

New 4 Square owners take over
Juanita and Richard have retired for the summer, and new owners Steve and Jo Price and family take over from the October 20. If you think it’s a name you’ve heard some-where before you’re probably right. Steve is better known as a premier rugby league player with 17 seasons in the NRL in-cluding four years for the War-riors. We welcome the new owners and wish Juanita and Richard well in their future en-deavours.

Something for everyone
Waipu Street Markets, Labour weekend Saturday 9am – 1pm – art, crafts, bric-a-brac, fruit and veg, coffee and cake. Just the place to meet and greet. Enquiries/bookings call Sue 432 1029.

Roundabout refurb
We notice the former Wicked Takeaways premises at the One Tree Point roundabout is undergoing some renovation towards an exciting new fu-ture. We’ll keep you posted.

Festival of Fibre
Easter is focusing on local artists with the ‘Festival of Fi-bre’ being held in the Corona-tion Hall on April 4.Showcas-ing local textile artists and fibre art including flax weaving, dollmakers and leatherworkers, this not-for-profit event is the first of its kind in Bream Bay with any surplus funds go-ing towards education and the promotion of fibre textiles.

It’s (un)real estate
Confidence in Bream Bay is obviously high as the remain-ing spot in the Marsden Cove centre has been snatched up by Ray White Real Estate. Builders will be moving in soon to re-adapt the interior to new use and the White and yellow signage is expected to be go-ing up in time for the opening late November.

Highwaymen?
We are told of a Waipu cy-clist who was accosted by a tree on a recent visit to the Nelson area. The tree was thought to be a member of the DoC gang. Unfortunately the cyclist was unable to identi-fy said tree which never real-ly said a word but ‘was quite intimidating’. His neck brace has now been discarded but cyclists in the area are warned about stopping in isolated lo-cations for fear of a reoccurance of this incident.

Dates to remember…
Waipu Fishing Comp, La-bour Weekend, October 25-26.
Ruakaka Primary School Gala, November 1, 10am-2pm.
