Sand mining plans concern MHRS

BY JULIA WADE

The debate over Te Arai sand continues with Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society (MHRS) stating that McCallum Brothers Ltd (MBL) sand removal plans creates more concerns than comfort.

In a recent statement published by the Mangawhai Focus (May 13), MBL director Callum McCallum advised the company will seek a continuance of their current consent to extract sand from a shallow 15 metre depth off the coastlines of Te Arai and Pakiri, while they conduct research into moving their sand mining operation to a more eco-friendly deeper depth of 25 metres.

MHRS spokesperson Ray Welson says it is surprising as McCallum’s had 14 years to prepare.

“They have had full knowledge of the termination date of their current consent and many years to carry out the additional investigations required for deep water extraction,” he says. “They have failed to do so... which raises concerns as to their project management.”

The Auckland-based sand and quarry company’s current agreement to nearshore mine up to 76,000 cubic metres of sand per year from Te Arai and Pakiri waters, expires in 2020. MBL are preparing to renew their agreement with Auckland and Rodney District Councils, and if successful will be allowed to extract 1.9 million cubic metres for another 25 years.

“It is the belief of the MHRS,” Welson says “that the damage already done to our coastal foreshore caused by the company’s current sand removal arrangement, is substantial reason that McCallum’s new sand extraction consent should not be renewed for sand extraction inshore of the 25 metre depth contour.”
