Councillor Comment - Mangawhai Community Plan implementation – getting it right

There is a lot of interest in the community at present about when various roading and walkway projects around Mangawhai are going to be completed. Following on from concerns about the form and location of walkways in and around Alamar reserve, Council has agreed to take a closer look at prioritisation and design detail of the various projects.

A meeting was recently held between elected members, Council staff and members of the former community advisory panel to discuss the Mangawhai Community Plan’s history and related issues. Further work is planned to determine how this process will proceed, and how to engage further with, and seek input from, interested community members and affected persons.

This is a great opportunity to get things right and look at providing what the community wants and needs first. Many of you have raised your concerns about some key components of Mangawhai’s infrastructure and I have been pushing these matters on your behalf.

These issues include:
1. Making sure any walkways or footpaths constructed in the Alamar Crescent area are fit for purpose and don’t unnecessarily degrade the beauty of the area.

2. Molesworth Drive shared path from the causeway past MAZ – a very dangerous section of road for cyclists and pedestrians that needs sorting out as soon as possible.

3. The rest of the shared path from the Village along Molesworth Drive to the causeway.

4. A pedestrian bridge beside the Insley St/Tomarata Rd bridge and connecting footpath (not scheduled at present until after 2028).

I will be ensuring that these items are fully considered as part of the prioritisation process, and that proper opportunity is provided for public input prior to implementation.

If you have any community projects or issues that you would like assistance with, I can be contacted on 021 185 8389 or Cr.Larsen@kaipara.govt.nz. Check out my ‘The WorkBoot Councillor’ Facebook page for regular updates.
