Northland climate great for growing

Cess Adams is a long-time nursery man who hails from the South but who now grows plants which thrive in the North.

So many varieties of plant have been dismissed as not being suitable for Northland conditions but Ces is keen to show through his years of experience and propagating up here, that plants like soft shell almonds, apricots, lilacs and many others can produce extremely well.

Cess specialises in many varieties but is finding that prune plums and sloes (prunus spinosa) ideal for gin flavouring, are proving very popular at the moment.

Bramley Apples are eagerly sought after by settlers from Old Blightey. There, a local identity felt that her town of Bramley needed an economic boost so she developed the now famous cooking apple and named it after her locality. Her sole efforts have created a huge industry for the area. Cess has these apple trees as well.

Roses are big on his stock list both old and new varieties, climbers and shrub types. He also has shelter trees for farms, to answer the criticism that many farms have insufficient shade for their animals plus additional shrubbery for protected waterways.

Old species of fruiting trees as well as modern types abound in his nursery on Connell Road Waipu. Gorgeous deciduous trees, already well formed, presently showing their startling autumn colours are popular too.

Pomegranate plants are high on the gardeners list as it is well proven that they have antioxidant qualities. The amount of juice extracted from just one fruit far exceeds expectations.

Cess has thrived on the reputation as the gardener's nursery. He can be found at the Mangawhai Market each Saturday from 9am-1pm, otherwise call 432 0121 to make an appointment to visit the Waipu nursery to view his huge range.

‘Plants grown in the North for the North’ is Cess’ motto and his 40 years of experience as a nurseryman shows in the quality of the plants he produces.
