Classes inspiring artist withinSeven local women who have joined the weekly Have a Go @ Art classes at the village hall found out that they had an artist within. After 11 weeks of experimenting with charcoal, pastels, watercolors and acrylic paint they have just completed their first canvas. Artist, teacher and inspirationalist Suza Lawrence is thrilled with the outcome. Suza, who has recently moved here, has moved quickly to encourage creativity and foster cultural exchange in the area. At the Mangawhai Library Hall she is teaching the Have a Go @ Art class for beginners and an acrylic painting class for intermediate artists both on Wednesdays and a life drawing class every second Tuesday evening. These classes run in five week blocks throughout the year and may be joined anytime. Suza's style of teaching is relaxed and inspirational, encouraging participants to find their own level and bringing out their very best. Suza is also organising informal social get-togethers and planning art-movie nights, art history workshops and guided gallery tours. Encouraged by the good response in Mangawhai she is now also planning a landscape drawing and painting class at the Waipu Cove surf club on Tuesday mornings starting in June. German by birth, Suza grew up in Turkey and lived in both Italy and Germany before settling in New Zealand. She earned a BA and MA (Hons) from Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland and is well known for her installations, interactive works as well as her long-term experience in teaching art. If you are keen to start an art class or are searching for something creative and fun to do this winter, Suza is on the lookout for more beginning, intermediate and professional artists and art lovers to join her activities.
