Mangawhai Walking Weekend - Mangawhai’s Magic Unleashed

From Jean Goldschmidt

This stunning location of Mangawhai, just 90 minutes north of Auckland, comes alive in the summer as visitors flock to enjoy the coastline, surf beaches, estuary, restaurants, vineyards, galleries, museum, skatepark, cycle tracks and the extensive walkways and tracks which are surveyed, built and maintained by Mangawhai Track Development Trust.

These tracks and other walks over farmland, through orchards, vines, even caving adventures and into the hilly Brynderwyns, are guided by local volunteers for visitors who are able to select their walks, graded from 1 (easy) to 5.

The annual Walking Weekend includes numerous highlights.

The Troubadour Trail on Friday has singing, music, dancing, storytelling and more with has varying  starting times in the afternoon. The Wine and Food Festival is held in the Olive Grove on Saturday from 3pm-7pm with band playing ($25 with booking form or $30 at the gate).

There are 20 walks to choose from on Saturday ($20-$45), the sumptuous Gourmet Breakfast on Sunday morning ($10), followed by 14 Sunday walks  ($10-$65).

At the same time, the Art Trail over the weekend is free for all to enjoy. Art display maps will be available online at mangawhaiartists.co.nz once details are finalised.

Let the Walking Weekend be a magical memory. See website mangawhaiwalkingweekend.co.nz for full information and booking forms or contact co-ordinator Jean Goldschmidt (09) 431 5096.

There’s music in the streets

Instruments, songs, magic and storytellers come to Mangawhai from afar for this afternoon of entertainment.
Beginning at the boat ramp at Alamar Crescent the trail wanders along the beach, up the steps to the cliffs above, along in front of the houses, across Troubadour Park, through the bushy Troubadour Track, and down to the beach again.
At five carefully chosen spots along the way the troubadours will appear suddenly before you. The walking group hushes as it hears the music before the musicians are seen.
Along the route the views are of the white sand, the intense blue of the sea, the special creamy-yellow of the sand hills on the spit and the continuous blue of the sky.
Tickets $10 ticket via the web page, Bammas, Mangawhai Books & Gifts or on the day; Absolutely NO DOGS on this walk; Pushchairs are difficult on the steps; Departure times 2.30pm, 3pm, 3.30pm.
