Surf shop hit by crime waveAfter a shock break-in less than three months ago, Bammas Surf and Leisure in Mangawhai Village was again the target in an early morning robbery last week.
The 2am assault, this time a raid through the front window, was again executed very swiftly with the villiains well-covered to avoid detection by CCTV cameras, grabbing their booty and escaping within minutes in a car believed to have been stolen from Whangarei earlier that day. With the local constabulary off duty at the time it was up to police from Orewa – some 40 minutes away – to survey the scene, by which time the trail was already cooling and though the getaway car was later reported seen in Kaitaia this has not been confirmed and that’s where the trail appears to end. Shop owners David and Mariska Glover are understandably distressed at the intrusions and, while they are again increasing security measures, feel they have little option but to get on with running their business which has been a commercial cornerstone in Mangawhai since the early 90s. Bammas was bought by the Glovers in 2011 and is well supported by locals who are likewise disappointed that the small, close-knit community has come under such attention. |
