PJ's Project warms spirits on childrens wardPatients at Whangarei Hospital’s children’s ward will be feeling more snug at night thanks to the donation of 133 pairs of new pyjamas by a Mangawhai group.
The Girls Together group – comprising 80 ladies from Mangawhai’s CauseWay Church – purchased 133 pairs of new pyjamas and 47 singlets between them for children in need at the ward. The ward caters for patients up to 16 years of age and pyjamas in all sizes were donated. Five-year-old patient Lewis Watene was spoilt for choice when he was the first to choose from the range featuring frogs, hearts, aeroplanes, cats and polka dots, to name a few. After some deliberation he chose the aeroplanes. Maternal and child health services operations manager Yvonne Hunter thanked Girls Together representatives Lauraine Sloane and Gale Matheson for their amazing donation. “At the moment we’re out there buying pyjamas for our own children and if we buy an extra pair or two it can make a difference,” said Lauraine, explaining that the group had wanted to do something that reached Northland children. Play specialists Karen Parker and Joan Livingstone said the pyjamas will go to children and young people who are hospitalised this winter. “Not only have (the Girls Together group) blown us away with the donation of so many pairs of brand new pyjamas, they want to do more,” said Karen. “A local group of knitters is also making beanies and some want to donate slippers. It has been awesome to see such an amazing community spirit.” Keen to be involved in a CauseWay Church project? Phone 431 4782 or email office@causewaychurch.org.nz for more details. |
