Two enthusiastic managers have become involved in a joint venture between Te Rorora Learning Assistance from Dargaville, and the Otamatea Community Services in Maungaturoto.
Denise Meiklejohn and Janet Rore are very enthusiastic about the new venture of training nine students to become literacy and numeracy tutors and to take their knowledge out into the community.
“This is the first of two courses which will be run in Maungaturoto,” says Denise.
“These are not necessarily people who can’t read or write but people who don’t understand the implications of, for example, a hire purchase agreement, buying on credit or borrowing money to buy a car at high interest.”
Denise and Janet are thrilled with the response, attracting a class of ten students raning in age from 30 to 60 years.
The first course runs daily for ten weeks until August when an assessment will be done to ascertain the results and plan for future expansion.
Adds Denise: “I have long held a dream that we can establish pre-employment computer training in Maungaturoto, especially for those who have never had the opportunity to learn computer skills, so at the conclusion of the literacy and numeracy training our next course will be the beginning of that computer training vision. We are very positive about the future.”
