Waipu Coastal Trail a Walking Weekend favouriteHave you walked the Waipu Coastal Trail? This little stretch of paradise between Waipu Cove and Ding Bay is a beauty with lovely stretches of native bush, beautiful rock formations and long grassy trails with amazing views over Bream Bay and the outlaying islands. The walking is good, mostly dry underfoot in summer, with the occasional challenge of climbing over rocks, steep steps and large tree trunks. Very low pohutukawa branches growing majestically over the track kept you alert as well. This mature coastal pohutukawa forest grows from the steep limestone cliffs, with rock formations similar to those at Punakaiki on the West Coast of the South Island. At low tide you can rest in the gorgeous wee sandy bays and just take in the breathtaking beauty of the sea and spectacular coastline. The southern end is a flowering forest of flax, with narrow pathways winding from the track down to rock platforms high above the sea – more beautiful rest spots to enjoy! Many land and sea birds can be observed along the way. This walk has been developed thanks to the determination of the late Alan McKenzie, local legend and visionary, who with his wife Marjorie, created an outstanding legacy to be enjoyed for generations to come. The track is now maintained by members of the Waipu Lions Club. Start your walk at Waipu Cove or there is an access point at Waterman Drive near Lang’s Beach. The walkway can be enjoyed in either direction; in places it crosses private land with riparian rights so please stay on the path. Please be aware of high tide times before you begin your walk, as entry at Waipu Cove may require a short wade across the stream. A reasonable level of fitness required, about two kilometers each way. Note that the Ding Bay end of this track is still under development. This track can be enjoyed at any time of the year but over summer, especially with crimson pohutukawa in bloom, it is just glorious. n Mangawhai Walking Weekend, March 25-26. Bookings open January 6, so book early to avoid disappointment. Go to mangawhaiwalking.co.nz. ALL YEAR: Enjoy outstanding views from above, and explore rocks and bays from below. |
