Tomarata Tag to go nationalGround too hard? Weather too hot? You’ve heard it said ‘when the going gets tough…’ and Tomarata Rugby Club’s Tag Football module is on the ball again.
Starting in 2012 and designed to give children and adults of the Mangawhai, Tomarata and Wellsford communities a summer sporting option, Tag Football has been a resounding success with up to 460 players turning up to play each week. Tag is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing sports and it is expected that there will be in excess of 70 regional teams from throughout New Zealand and Australia. Last year New Zealand Tag Football invited Tomarata to enter a team to represent Northland at the Tag Football Nationals that were held in Henderson (West Auckland) in February 2014. This was a fantastic opportunity for the players, firstly to represent their region in a national competition and secondly to see how others play the game. “We also had the added benefit of the chief NZ Tag coach take us under his wing and teach us a few things!” says club spokeswoman Tasha Kimani. This year the club is sending a senior mixed and U18s men’s team to the three day tournament starting on Friday February 20 to Sunday the February 22, again at Trust Stadium, Henderson. “We’ve had a lot of support from locals,” says Tasha “but we’re still trying to get sponsorship at the moment to keep the enthusiasm going and enable us to compete on a national scale.” If you can help out please contact Tasha on (09) 431 5444. |
