Keeping the ‘magic’ in Mangawhai

From the Mangawhai Community Waste Water Scheme (MCWWS) Advisory panel

The Mangawhai Community Wastewater Scheme has helped improve water quality in the Harbour and put the magic back into Magical Mangawhai. It treats wastewater to a high standard and has the capacity to cope with many more connections.

The requirements for our treated effluent are set by the resource consent issued by Northland Regional Council. We consistently equal or better the standards set by this consent. The treated water standard is higher than septic tank outputs and most small communal schemes that still operate within the Mangawhai area. This is all good news for the Mangawhai Harbour

Mangawhai’s growth was strong when the plant was designed. The plant was built to have the capacity to meet Mangawhai’s growth. Mangawhai is growing again and there is now an opportunity to extend the reticulation network to enable more property owners to connect. We are looking at what properties in the drainage area could and should be connected.

Network expansion options
If we want more people to connect we may have to extend the reticulation pipework to other parts of the drainage area. The disposal system at Browns Farm is nearing its capacity. Extending the disposal system is one of a number of options we need to consider when we look at what we should do going forward.

There are some properties that could be connected with relative ease and for a small additional cost. These properties currently use a combination of on-site or communal wastewater systems. Some systems will work well, others will not be working as well as they should. The bigger problem is the combined number of systems that compete to drain their wastewater in a confined area that is made up of very sandy soil. The nutrients that remain in this treated wastewater ultimately end up in the Mangawhai Harbour. They find their way into the Mangawhai Harbour through well-draining sandy soil into a series of natural drains and streams or are washed there by rain.

There is also a concern that water bores in the Mangawhai are relatively shallow. Any contamination that finds its way in to these natural water tables will affect the quality of the water drawn from these bores.

These two reasons alone should be more than enough to encourage people to want to connect to the Scheme as soon as possible. Both issues have the potential to affect the health and wellbeing, not only of the Harbour itself, but of the people who come to Mangawhai to live or visit and enjoy the Harbour and all it has to offer.

Public input and consultation
There are a number of options for how the reticulation pipework could be extended, how the capacity for disposal could be increased and how this could be funded. We would also need to consider what would be publically owned and what would be privately owned. These are some of the challenges that we on the Advisory Panel are grappling with and would like to discuss with you.

We all want to see the water quality in the Mangawhai Harbour continue to improve. The Harbour is a magical place – ideal for swimming, boating and gathering seafood. The Mangawhai Community Wastewater Scheme can continue to protect the Harbour and its waterways now and into the future for the enjoyment of generations to come.

Let’s keep the Harbour clean and the magic in Mangawhai.
