Park great value to community

The council-owned Mangawhai Park, which lies between the golf course and Molesworth Drive, is often regarded as a weed-infested scrubland of little value. However, since the first track was cut in the area around three years ago the area has blossomed as a focus for walkers, mountain bikers, skate boarders, and families enjoying the Mangawhai Activity Zone.

The Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust and its supporters have now established a network of well-used walking tracks throughout the park with the three major tracks – Paul’s, Last of the Summer Wine, and Molesworth Drive – linked by the MAZ, Sandstone Gully, and treatment plant tracks.

Walkers may be surprised at the beauty of the dominant tall kanuka forest with an undergrowth of not just asparagus fern, but also glades of kauri grass, sphagnum moss, and tree fern.

The park includes a number of wetlands and features such as the sandstone gully and two very large pohutukawa. These walks provide cool and shady walking in summer while sheltered and dry underfoot in winter and you don’t have to be a mountain climber to get around its easy grades.

The tracks trust is constructing robust boardwalks over the wet areas and carries out spraying of asparagus fern to ensure tracks remain in good shape – but nothing beats lots of walkers for keeping the weeds at bay and the surface in good nick.

Dog owners should note that while no dogs are allowed on DoC tracks (the Cliff Top Walk, and Tanekaha Forest Track) they are welcome in the park provided they are under control and owners pick up after them.

The tracks Trust welcomes anyone willing to help maintain and develop new tracks in the area and is grateful for donations of materials. To get involved please contact Gordon Hosking gordon.hosking@xtra.co.nz 431 5779, or Mike Robinson dimikenz@clear.net.nz 431 5443.
