Social focus for university scholarship winnerA Bachelor of Social Sciences is just the beginning for Rodney College student Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Campbell.
The newly-announced University of Waikato Golden Jubilee Scholar has plans be-yond the three years it will take to complete her BSocSci. “I hope to continue on and do clinical psychology,” she says. “I want to work in social psychology helping people in the community.” At her school prizegiving recently, Libby was presented with one of just 10 Golden Jubilee Scholarships to the Uni-versity of Waikato. The Golden Jubilee Scholarships were awarded as part of the university’s 50th anniversary this year and are worth up to $40,000 each. They have been awarded to students who have demonstrated a high level of academic excellence, leadership potential and com-munity citizenship. Libby was Dux at Rodney College and also the school’s student support leader this year. She says applying for the scholarship had been suggested by the school’s careers adviser. “I didn’t think much about it and didn’t really think I would have much show but it was very exciting and a real honour to receive the scholarship,” she says. She plans on visiting the campus before the end of the year but has another mission to complete before then. She will spend about 10 days tramping in the Nelson Lakes with her Duke of Edinburgh group. “It’s the last part of my Duke of Edinburgh gold award,” she says.“So yeah, it’s been a good year.” |
