Mangawhai idol to kick off music festivalThe pop idol that young Mangawhaiians like to call ‘ours’ is coming back for her first stage performance in Mangawhai in two years.
A regular in the NZ Music Charts, Jamie McDell has just completed a Bachelorate in design in Auckland combining music and study, and told The Focus she’s excited about fronting the Christmas Music Festival at the Mangawhai Tavern on December 27. “I know I have a big following in Mangawhai and I’m looking forward to the show and spending a little time there,” she says admitting to still being passionate about the beach and surf lifesaving. Producing a steady flow of music, the singer-songwriter defies being given a genre though admits her affinity with the acoustic guitar has probably given her a slightly ‘country’ edge. She simply writes from the heart on personal and life experiences and what fits her guitar style. “But I can really get inspired by anything,” she says. Jamie’s first album Six Strings And A Sail-boat was voted Best Pop Album in 2013. Her re-cent single Dumb, which peaked at number 3 on the New Zealand music charts is a little more upbeat and new single Crash from her forth-coming album was inspired by the story of a friend, and showcases a different side to her song writing. “The production is definitely more edgy than I was used to but it all began to work once the lyrics and melody for the chorus came out. That raw edginess is very much representative of what the song is about.” Her natural musical maturity shows in her second album Ask Me Anything, due for release in February, which takes her music to a new level, tells more of her stories yet retains her ‘girl next door’ image. At the Tavern Jamie will be joined on stage by Kiwi music icon Jason Kerrison, former Op Shop frontman and New Zealand’s Got Talent judge now forging a solo career. The now 22-year-old Jamie is enthusiastic at the prospect of working with Kerrison. “The experienced musicians are a great help and give a lot of good advice and encouragement to increase your confidence. I’m sure Mangawhai will enjoy the show.” Jamie McDell & Jason Kerrison, Mangawhai Tavern, Dec 27, 8.30pm-1am. |
