Film crew follow day in the life of local potter

Potter on TV-414On Sunday December 7 the Jam TV crew descended upon Mangawhai potter Gary Smith for TV One’s This Town programme.

The day began at 6am when Gary and partner Vanessa headed out to the Hen and Chicken Islands with the film crew in hot pursuit, filming from a chartered vessel skippered by Jerry Hutchinson.

“Weather perfect, sea like a mirror, though we came home empty-handed,” says Gary. Nevertheless the film crew were treated to some stunning scenery and reeled off some fantastic footage.

After boat cleaning and breakfast, filming recommenced at the little pottery in Insley St, capturing a series of pottery techniques including coiling, throwing of a large amphora, some incise decorating of large platters and glazing.

All this was followed by a leisurely but in-depth interview with the couple at their De Boer Lane home where they dis-cussed parts of Gary’s life, his expoits, extensive worldwide travel as a younger man and his more recent trip to glean pottery secrets from the masters in Italy.

“Finally my pots get the recognition they deserve!” exclaims Gary who spent several days setting up different demonstrations under direction of the the film crew – a great opportunity to display his wares.

Mangawhai Pottery has now been in operation for four years this Christmas and is proud to show off a shop full of great gifts, collectables and superbly well-crafted pieces for any pot-tery lover.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers who have supported us over that time and wish Mangawhai a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,” say Gary and Vanessa.

The This Town series visits places many tend to drive through without stopping, and highlights interesting people who embody the heartland of New Zealand through their journeys of discovery and challenge. Keep an eye open for the new series early in the New Year.
