Descendant to deliver New Year messageThe Rev Samuel Marsden, a di-rect descendant of the Rev Samuel Marsden who preached the first Christian sermon in NZ on Christmas Day 1814, is going to give a sermon at morning worship (family service) at Christ the King An-glican Church, Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai, January 4 at 9.30am.
It is hoped he will bless and plant a heritage rose grown by the Heritage Rose Society and named Samuel Marsden in his great, great, great grandfather’s honour. All are welcome to attend this little piece of history. The area is significant to Samuel Marsden as his name has been given to Marsden Point, Marsden Bay and both the yacht and boat clubs at Bream Bay. He also turned the first sod and named St Michael and All Angels church at Hakaru, Mangawhai. His descendant is looking forward to coming back to NZ and will be part of the celebration of 200 years of Christianity in Aotearoa at Oihi in the Bay of Islands. |
