Zonta NewsYouth award open
Applications are now open for the Zonta Club of Mangawhai 4th annual award for young women. Suitable applicants aged 15-18 in the Wellsford to Bream Bay area have the opportunity to apply for a 10-day Youth Development Voyage on the Spirit of Adventure. Previous winners include Charlene Kahotea-Smith and Hayley Aldworth from Rodney College, and Leila Stephens from Otamatea High School. For more information or applications phone 027 555 6636 or email mangawhai@zonta.org.nz. Celebrate the vote Mangawhai Zonta are also celebrating 121 years of women gaining the right to vote in New Zealand with a breakfast at the Waipu Golf Club, Friday September 19 from 9am. Jill Mutch and Sarah Shaw will be giving speeches at 10am. It’s all a reminder to use the hard-earned right to vote the next day in the general election. All are welcome to attend. White Ribbon stall To commence a two year partnership with the Sophie Elliott Foundation, Mangawhai Zonta will be having a White Ribbon stall at the Saturday market in Mangawahi on November 22. All funds collected will be passed on to the Sophie Elliot Foundation. This funding is to assist with the printing of a book containing practical advice to help young people remain safe in relationships, particularly in a dating sense. The book will be offered free of charge to students who participate in the Loves-Me-Not workshops for Year 12 students (girls and boys) delivered by three trained facilitators, one from the Police, a local NGO (Non-Government Organization) and a teacher. This will be an interactive day-long workshop focussed towards teens learning about healthy and unhealthy behaviours in a relationship, how to recognise abusive behaviours, effective bystander strategies and where to go for help. Domestic violence awareness The common goal of both Zonta and the Sophie Elliot Foundation is the prevention of domestic violence and the empowerment of women through education and awareness. Violence against women is a huge social issue that affects all sectors of New Zealand society. Since Sophie Elliot died on 9 January 2008 at the hands of a former boyfriend, around 80 women have similarly lost their lives. Mangawhai Zonta is also planning its own awareness evening about domestic violence in the Mangawhai Hall on Tuesday November 25 which is also White Ribbon day. Speakers for this event are yet to be confirmed, but it will be on much the same lines as the workshop above. |
