Raw deal for raw milkWhat began as a small business serving a genuine local need with a growing number of grateful customers has soured somewhat of late with some giving our raw milk suppliers a raw deal.
The Grayson farm is on no-exit Bagnall Rd which branches off the western part of Cove Rd, quite a few kilometres from Mangawhai town. With a certified natural and healthy milk product available for locals using a time-honoured honesty box system, many are unfortunately abusing this privilege by taking product but leaving IOUs, outdated coins, worthless foreign currency, and even Australian car wash tokens in place of payment. Abuse it and you’ll lose it is the message from farmer Sandra Grayson who reminds customers that payment can be made by Internet banking, coupons, forward credit, email and now, even a phone app. “It is unlikely anyone ‘just happens to be passing’ out here and drops in on a whim, so they should have some money for payment with them,” says Sandra. “This means that those heading out here are generally coming specifically to collect milk.” Due to costs, milk prices will rise from September 1 but at $2.50 per litre this is still great value for the real deal – cheaper if you supply your own container – plus there are the other natural products available including cream, free range eggs and homemade goodies, preserves and fresh produce in season. Come on Mangawhai, don’t abuse this goodwill offering. Don’t let a few spoil it for a lot. SHORT CHANGED: IOU’s, tokens and essentially worthless foreign coins are not much to build a business on, says farm goods producer Sandra Grayson. - Rob Pooley |
