Public forum to plan tracks future

In the beginning there were very few tracks or walks in Mangawhai. There was however, one well-known track, the Mangawhai Cliff Top Walk, which gained international fame and was featured in the Lonely Planet publication. More overseas visitors than New Zealanders walked the track, with the exception of the local people.

With very few tracks and even lack of footpaths in Mangawhai most people walked the beach. Magical Mangawhai was, and still is, a secret to most New Zealanders.

Jean Goldschmidt had a vision for a number of local tracks that would promote the area, assist the local economy and provide walks for all people – tracks that could be used by locals and visitors and would compliment her Walking Weekends.

In 2007, a small group of five, and Lucky the dog, began cutting a track from the back of The Club to the present site of the Mangawhai Museum. Last of the Summer Wine was the first track formed but it was not to be the last. Tracks have been opened up where many locals had never been and definitely not visitors, through native bush, by kauri dams, near waterfalls, over hills, with views of the sea and surrounding land.

Anyone interested is invited to the public forum at The Club on September 8; see what has been achieved and find out about plans for the future. It is a chance to meet some of the trustees and some of the trackies who do the hard yards on a Friday morning.

Four Australian visitors rated the Tanekaha Falls Track the highlight of their trip, putting it ahead of the Mangawhai Cliff Top Walk – they had sea views in Aussie but not the beautiful bush that Mangawhai has to offer. Promoted in the Lonely Planet book the Cliff Top Walk is a winner but it won't be long before visitors to our shores stay an extra night to do the mighty Tanekaha Track.

You may even consider being involved as a trackie, on new tracks or in the maintenance team that has recently been formed. This team will be striving to keep present tracks up to an acceptable standard. If you would like to be involved, we can tell you how. All volunteers are on an as-you-can-come basis, and the camaraderie is great.

We will welcome your ideas and priorities for tracks in the Mangawhai area, and any feedback you would like to provide.

Mangawhai Tracks Chritable Trust public forum, The Club, Monday September 8 at 2pm.
