MHRS volunteers keep busyMangawhai Harbour Restoration Society and a willing bunch of volunteers has been extremely active of late. Their first major task has been the eradication of mangroves, beginning around the Lincoln St Reserve then up the Estuary and along Insley St, with still more to come. There has been a lot of compliments about the clean look of the harbour following mangrove removal.
Following a hammering in the July storms, volunteers (pictured) again came out in force last weekend making a start on replanting the Sandspit. Over 10,000 spinifex and pingao grasses are being planted to stabilise the bund wall and the dunes against further erosion, an ongoing problem thanks to the wind. A big happy team managed to plant 7,000 on the weekend with the remainder to go in as soon as volunteers were sufficiently recovered. A big thanks to all from the Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society. Following a succesful Queens Birthday fishing competition and surplus fish auction, work began recently on upgrading the boat ramp at the end of Alamar Cres. This will provide easier access to boaties and a bigger turnaround area which must relieve stress for both vehicles and owners at peak times. |
