Candidates meeting: MP shouted downThe Wellsford Promotions Association invited Northland candidates to a Meet Your Candidate evening on August 14.
Held at the Wellsford Commu-nity Centre this was an opportunity for voters from the area to make a connection with their Parliamentary representatives and address press-ing issues. Candidates present were Mike Sabin (National), Paul Doherty representing David Clendon (Green), Willow-Jean Prime (Labour), Ken Rintoul (Focus NZ), Mel Taylor (Conservative), Robin Grieve (Act), and David Wilson (Democratic). For the most part the meeting was orderly as candidates were given equal time to speak on behalf of their party and, more specifically, on local issues of importance they would focus on if elected. However, according to Mangawhai Focus sources, proceedings took a negative turn when the last speaker, National’s Mike Sabin, took the podium. Barely had he de- livered his spiel when he was lam-basted at length by a barrage of accusations and abuse by Mangawhai Ratepayers & Residents Association (MRRA) chairman, Bruce Rogan. The meeting chairman did little to intervene or control the situation, which ran out of hand for considerable time until Mr Rogan became seated again. Comments from attendees varied but many were pleased to have the opportunity for face-to-face contact with the candidates and to hear them speak in person while others said they were embarrassed for Mangawhai as to how the meeting ended. The MRRA is organising a similar meeting at Mangawhai on September 6. National candidate Mike Sabin is unable to attend this fixture but will be holding his own meeting at the Insley St Recreational Centre on Saturday August 30. |
