Mayors Memo - A new shape for Council

jason-457Kia ora.

Getting on with the job of setting up the future of our rapidly growing Kaipara District is a theme for what’s happening this season around Council. Firstly, it’s been great to see so many locals attending the council District Plan meetings where everyone’s ideas have been gathered about what’s important about the place and how we all are working towards and shaping our tomorrows. The new Kaipara District Plan will be key to the future of the place. Anyone who’s seeking a vacant industrial-zoned section of land will be well aware how hard (some would say impossible) such a thing is to find today across Kaipara District; our growth demands have well outstripped the current District Plan and it’s good that we’re making great progress here and so many of you are contributing already. Thanks for helping shape this.

A new shape for your Council representatives for the upcoming October 2019 local government elections has also been decided in the last few weeks. The Local Government Commission has determined for us there will be a Mayor elected at large plus eight Councillors, the same number as at present but in a different ‘shape’. There will be four wards of two councillors each, with a new Kaiwaka-Mangawhai ward and reshaped Otamatea and West Coast-Central wards. Watch for extra information about the changes coming your way. It was more than 12months ago when Council started this important process about how we are all represented, and thanks to the many people who contributed their voices to the Representation Review along the way, from the pre-consultation through the formal consultation and all the way to the appeals to the Local Government Commission. I’m encouraged about the civic engagement across Kaipara here.

In this busy season for civic engagement, we have a record number of submissions for the new Dog By-law. At this stage there will be nearly two days of hearings for this – lots of people are exercised about their dogs and it’s going to be great to have these clear voices helping shape the dog’s eye view of our place.

Speaking of clear voices, at last count there were 555 members on The People’s Panel. I hear this is one of the fastest growing versions of a people’s panel anywhere in New Zealand. This initiative, started in late 2018 as a way to bring extra voices to Council processes, is expanding rapidly. It’s free to join – www.kaipara.govt.nz/panel - and the more people we have the better this will be. Is your voice here yet? We’re listening.

Nga mihi nui,

Jason Smith
