Mangawhai rec centre establishedFirst established in 1991 to assist and encourage the development of community sports and recreational needs, the Mangawhai Community Trust has gone on to assist a wide spectrum of clubs and sporting groups.
Soon after its inception Trustees recognised a need to establish an indoor recreational centre, thanks in large part to a substantial legacy from the late Colin Bower, whose foresight as Mangawhai Beach School Board of Trustees Chairman, initiated the project. Further fundraising was undertaken locally and a team of volunteers led by Burt Sainsbury rapidly constructed the 678 sqm building. A Licence to Occupy was negotiated with the Ministry of Education for the centre to occupy Mangawhai Beach School land with the proviso that, when appropriate, the building would be passed into school ownership. Over the years a wide range of sporting, recreation, community and cultural activities have found a home in the centre, and this will continue. The Trustees have recognised the rapid growth of Mangawhai and of the Mangawhai Beach School roll, and have agreed that now is the time to pass the building into the care of the Board of Trustees. At the same time a number of improvements have been undertaken. These will bring greater flexibility of use and will enable the building to remain a key facility for both Mangawhai Beach School and for community-wide recreational needs. The Trustees would like to pass on a sincere vote of thanks to all who initiated the project and to everyone who has used the facility, and all those Trustees who put so much time into the care of an important community asset.
