Fresh fish for a good causeThe weather Gods were smiling as Easter Saturday dawned bright and clear for the annual Mangawhai Boating and Fishing Club annual fishing competition, supported by principal sponsors ITM Mangawhai and ITM Warkworth.
A big school of 108 contestants spent a good day on the water and although numbers caught didn’t quite scale the lofty heights of other years, officials weighed in a total of 138 fish with a total weight of 272kg. The fish were then sold by local auctioneer Dave Lincoln off the back of the ITM truck, raising $1548 to be donated to the Mangawhai Surf Lifesaving Club, whose volunteers protect the local seaside, and help kids and adults build confidence in the water through lifesaving skills and competition. Major prize winners included Bruce Fenton (5.475kg schnapper), Emma Fenton (2.315kg kahawai), Keegan Anderson (1.82 kg trevally), Rob Cameron (1.275kg John Dory), Tony Gripdeng (0.64kg gurnard), and Brad Morgan-Kemp (9.36kg kingfish). Junior winner, heaviest fish of all species, was Kaiha Gilbertson (4.89 kg kingfish). |
