MP welcomes Northland growth studyMP for Northland, Mike Sabin, has welcomed a new programme of work to evaluate opportunities to further increase investment, employment and incomes in the Northland region.
The Northland Regional Growth Study, announced by Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce and Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy, will see government work alongside regional stakeholders such as the local and regional councils, Northland Inc and the NEAG to deliver a broad study of the region’s economic potential. “This is a positive acknowledgement of the work the region has been doing to develop its business growth agenda, and the desire in the region to embrace opportunities for growth and jobs,” Mr Sabin says. “The Northland Economic Action Group that emerged from the whole-of-region economic summits I ran in 2012 has worked closely with Northland Inc to develop a cohesive growth agenda. It has enabled stakeholders such as myself to advocate far more effectively for policy, resources and economic development opportunities like this growth study. Mr. Sabin says the growth study is the second big win on the economic development front for Northland. The Primary Industries Initiative launched last October will see the Ministry of Primary Industries working with NEAG, Northland Inc and other local stakeholder help to grow the primary production sector across the region. “MPI are already working with our primary sector to help grow productivity in areas such as forestry, horticulture, agriculture through this Primary Industries Initiative and this in itself is an exciting chance to unlock the potential of the primary sector in Northland,” Mr Sabin says. “We know that these sectors are a large part of Northland’s economy, but there is significant scope to add more value to these and other resource-based industries in the region. In this regard the growth study will enable an evaluation of other opportunities to develop further avenues of economic growth, like manufacturing and tourism. The opportunities will be identified through bringing together knowledge held by local business people, iwi/Maori and stakeholders, with official data, and independent economic analysis. “The Regional Growth Study and the Primary Industries Initiative focus on growing the whole of Northland’s economy which will accelerate our growth, employment opportunities and prosperity. We are now the fastest growing region in the country and the best is yet to come – but it is coming.” |
