Funds to help extend pontoon
Glorious weather over the Easter break, an extremely successful fishing competition, together with an increased number of boat owners keen to get out on the water, highlighted the need for planned extensions to the boat ramp and pontoon. Mangawhai Boating & Fishing Club president Buck Buchanan says work will get underway in earnest towards the end of the month when the tides will be favourable, giving them the space they need at low tide.

"We are pretty close to securing the funding required," he says, "and the support for the Easter fishing competition really helped."

The current 50-metre L-shaped pontoon was installed by the club some six years ago, and will now be extended a further six metres into deeper water. The new boat ramp will be built on the north side of the pontoon, restricted to launching boats, while incoming boats will be retrieved from the existing ramp on the south side of the pontoon. All good news for boaties. Just don't mention the parking issues!

Fairy tern figures released
NZ Fairy Tern Trust has released breeding figures for the 2014/15 season, showing Mangawhai as the favoured site for nesting, and Te Arai currently the favoured post-breeding flocking site. Total eggs laid (2013/14 season in brackets) during the 2014/15 season 31 (20); hatched 11 (12) with five chicks branded then lost in a storm; chicks fledged 6 (12).

Predator control is essential. Trapper Reg Whale does a lot of vital work out on the spit. His totals for September 2014 through to February 2015: 91 hedgehogs, 55 rats, 7 cats, 10 stoats, 1 weasel, 25 possums, 27 rabbits, 20 hawks, 1 ferret, and 6 pigs.
