Scene & Heard

FOR CARVERS AND SCULPTORS, Sculpture Northland is being held November 7-15 at the Whangarei Quarry Gardens, Russell Rd. Open daily 9am to 4pm with the works of 30 talented Northland artists. Over 70 wonderful sculptures are even more exciting seen in this dramatic garden setting of spectacular subtropical plants, rocks and sheer cliffs and all will be for sale. The Whangarei Floral Art Group will also be wowing the public with a display of their amazing natural creations. Online check out whangareigardens.org.nz.

FINDING IT IMPOSSIBLE to shop for pretty, colourful mastectomy bras and swimwear, local entrepreneur and breast cancer survivor Sharan McNaughton decided to do something about it. She has sourced products both affordable and fashionable for women in her own situation and has started selling them online. Check out her website taraswimwear.co.nz.

LOVED AND UN-LOVED TV and radio personality Paul Henry has also recently succumbed to the lure of the Kaipara having bought a piece of lifestyle in Paparoa. He expects his next purchase to be the ‘mandatory’ boat for fishing. He also shares Petley Rd with raconteur cum muso Sam Hunt.

BUSY OVER LABOUR WEEKEND was the new Wood St Freehouse. Unfortunately no tea or coffee available but diners were complimentary on the variety and quality of food and beverages. No major teething problems said owner Evan King, “just waiting for summer to arrive.”

EARLY WARNING! If you’re a fan of dub, reggae, soul and jazz, top Kiwi seven-part band Fat Freddys Drop will be performing at the Mangawhai Tavern December 27. The Tavern has a great line-up of entertainment booked for the holiday season.

A RECENT PASSING of note has been that of Pauline Toye. Longtime member of Mangawhai Garden Club then supporter of Mangawhai Artists group and participant in number of art trails passed away on October 26. Condolences to Dallas and the family.

WE HAVE ALL SEEN local lass Kayla Sharpe doing her thing in the Hyundai advert on TV but I wonder how many had picked up that the new ANZ advert was also shot in Mangawhai. I thought I noticed Vista Verano subdivision but not so. However, check it out and you’ll get a quick glimpse of two local locations, Coal Hill Road and Thelma Road South.

MARGIE HANNON, former face of the Mangawhai Focus for three years and well-known in adult riding and local horse circles, last week tied the knot with partner Darren George in Rarotonga. The couple currently live in Waipu Cove as they organise their property in Uretiti.

MANGAWHAI AMBULANCE STATION, yes, it’s good to go and all are invited to an open day, Sunday November 22, 10-1pm, Molesworth Drive. Organisers and the St John group are thrilled to show what your invaluable support has built for the community.

CONGRATS to local students who featured in the ASB Northland Secondary School sports awards: Braden Curel, Waterskiing (Dargaville HS); Cullen Curtis, Motocross (Otamatea HS); Connor Van Dalsun, Tennis (Otamatea HS).

MOVIE BUFFS can see a well-loved character in Mr. Holmes, showing at Kaiwaka on Friday November 13. It stars Ian McKellen as an aged, retired Sherlock Holmes dealing with early dementia as he tries to remember his final case and a woman, the memory of whom still haunts him. An interesting plot.

Mangawhai road works 2015-470WORKMEN are doing a great job with kerb and channelling and new footpaths alongside MAZ and around the Molesworth Dr/Moir Pt Rd intersection. Looks good. Safety and beautification in one fell swoop in preparation for our holiday visitors.
