Volunteer network evening a chance to help your communityMangawhai Information Centre will host an informal gathering at the Mangawhai Tavern where those interested can have a drink, catch up, and have a chance to discover the wide variety of community organisations keen to provide volunteering opportunities for locals. This is the second meeting of its kind after a successful volunteer network evening was held in March and hosted by Libby Clews of Helping Hands. When Adrienne Osman arrived to live permanently in Mangawhai eight years ago she decided volunteering would be the ideal way to become part of the community. Starting with the Mangawhai Memo, she made friends who suggested she try the Community Garden. From there she spent some time at the Mangawhai Information Centre, helping with Cancer Society collections, and now at the Mangawhai Movies. “You want to meet people and give something to the community, then volunteer,” says Adrienne, her eyes lighting up as she speaks of the friends she has made and the interest each organisation has brought her. “It doesn’t matter if you’ve been here six months or twenty years.” Volunteer options include the library, Helping Hands, St John, Walking Weekend, sports clubs, op shops, Te Whai Community Trust, or the Mangawhai Museum. Want to find out more? Discover your volunteering passion, learn more about local community organisations and where you might like to spend some time helping out. § Volunteer Network Evening, Mangawhai Tavern, Thurs Nov 12, 5pm-6pm.
