Wearable arts anniversary promises to be spectacular

Entries are now being sought for this year’s 10th Anniversary Waipu Museum Wearable Arts Awards and show.

Artists and designers entering the show will be vying for a prize pool of around $15,000 over four main categories and the ever-popular mask section for kids. The only criteria that covers all the garments is that they contain an element of visible and obvious tartan – painted, stitched, welded, engineered, embroidered or woven. No holds or materials barred.

Artistic director Debi Walters Brown has an enormous amount of experience in all aspects of theatrical productions and is a great fan of wearable art.

“Any aspect of art that is wearable can find a place in Art n Tartan, but the work must be original, innovative, revolutionary and well made,” she says. “Copies and store-bought costumes will not be allowed.”

Debi’s concept for the show will focus on presenting the costumes in a way that maximises the skill of the designers and models, enhanced and supported by exceptional lighting effects.

Music from local performers, kapa haka groups, singers, dancers and the beloved Scottish pipers will entertain and represent the spirit and heritage of Waipu. There are a number of categories allowing all age groups and abilities to flex their creative muscles.

Entry forms can be downloaded from the Waipu Museum website or from the front desk of the museum. Entry fee is $25 per garment and $10 for mask entries. Closing date is April 24 with designer’s creations to be completed for preliminary judging on June 7. Keep an eye on the Waipu Museum Art n Tartan Facebook page for updates or contact artntartan@gmail.com for any further queries.
