News in Brief

Brewers taste success
Popular McLeod’s Brewery in Waipu has had two of its brews, McLeod’s Great Migration IPA and McLeod’s Longboarder Lager, named in the top 30 beers and ciders in the country at the recent New World Beer and Cider awards. Sawmill Brewery in Matakana won an award for its Sawmill Pilsner and 8 Wired Brewing Warkworth won an award for its 8 Wired iStout.

Each entry was judged blind and assessed on its merits using a collaborative approach based on technical excellence, balance and drinkability. A full list of the Top 30 winning beers and ciders, as well as the 70 Highly Commended brews, can be found on the New World website at newworld.co.nz/Top30.

Heavy rain repair
Urgent repairs to the road surface on State Highway 1 north of Warkworth had to be made last week, with heavy rain over Queen’s Birthday Weekend causing several potholes to appear in the road outside the Totalspan building (between Kaipara Flat Rd and Sheepworld) in the Dome Valley. Emergency repairs were initially carried out first to fill in the holes and a roadside slip was also cleared.

Motorists are also being advised to watch out for other road crews also working overnight in the Dome Valley.

Did you know?
Mangawhai Beach School has a collection box at the office for old mobile phones. It is estimated that up to three million phones become obsolete and only 2 per cent of those are recycled.

Phones collected earn the school rewards and help the environment by keeping landfills free of toxins and hazardous substances. Call the school office on 431 4385 for more info.

Breakfast hosts wanted
Breast Cancer Foundation NZ Ambassador Stacey Morrison is encouraging Northlanders to host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast this July to help raise urgent funds needed to support patients and save lives. Last year, 151 breakfasts were held in Northland, where more than 165 people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. In New Zealand over 3300 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, with more than 650 still dying. For more information and to register to host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast, visit pinkribbonbreakfast.co.nz.
