Charity work world away from previous careerThe Rebus Club had a good turnout for guest speaker Gillian Whitley who spoke about NZ Leprosy Mission’s charity work in Bangladesh, Nepal and other places at their meeting last month.
Gillian’s warmth and humour made the talk, video and slide shows very interesting. Leprosy Mission is the oldest charitable organisation in NZ Gillian believes, and previously had a stall at the Village Market. Gillian’s work at the mission was very different from her previous career in HR in a high-rise office tower with harbour views, but the challenge was more than rewarding. “Advances in antibiotics, surgery and whole families with lives of patients and their families transformed is fantastic,” said Gillian. Congratulations were also given to Mangawhai’s Christine Bygrave following her Queen’s Service Medal award. Rebus president David Foster joked that now that Christine had the award she’ll just have to keep on serving the community. Annette Sicely presented both Christine and Gillian with exquisite flowers that she had arranged. Next meeting July 20. Meet at the Mangawhai Museum 2pm (Note venue change).
