DIY workshop for junior surfersCraig Freeman of Lemuria Surfboards has lived his lifetime passion of surfing and making surfboards and now wants to pass on some of his practical and historical knowledge to local youngsters. Sponsored jointly by the Kaipara District Council and Creative Communities NZ, Lemuria Surfboards of Mangawhai is hosting an ancient surfboard workshop for 8-13 year-olds in a single 3.5 hour session later in the month. The ‘Paipo’ and ‘Alaia’ boards are flat, relatively simple, finless wooden boards, are the first known artifacts of wave riding and an integral part of the history of the sacred Polynesian activity we call ‘surfing’ today. “Mangawhai kids love the water,” says Craig “Those who attend will learn about the history of surfing and gain some basic woodworking skills, including supervised use of simple hand tools through hands-on experience. They will walk away with an amazing learning experience as well as their own ancient wooden surfboard at a highly discounted rate of just $80 per child.” Craig says that despite the advances in technology and the streamlining of boards over the years, the Polynesian boards are definitely rideable and believes it is still important and interesting to learn the basics and some of the history of this unique sport, how different boards do what they do and how different types of boards act differently according to the conditions. “Its great to have this opportunity to be able to pass on my knowledge,” he says. n WHEN & WHERE: February 27 & 28, Lemuria Surfboards workshop, Rakaunui, 28 Molesworth Dr, Mangawhai Village.
