Moonlit night draws large crowdsBy Julia Wade
Budding artists of all ages and artistic levels have been finding their way down to the local art gallery over the last two weeks, immersing themselves among quirky-shaped canvases and fluorescent paint. Mangawhai Artists Inc. (MAI) second community art project, ‘Magical Mangawhai Goes Bush - One Moonlit Night’, has been deemed a huge success attracting close to a thousand locals and visitors through the gallery doors, MAI spokesperson Lynn Middleton says. “It has been incredible, the community has really supported it,” she says. “It’s interesting to see parents bring their kids in to paint and after a time they can’t help but get involved themselves, and some return at a later time on their own.” Middleton says the free creative event would not have been possible without the support of local sponsors. “Kaipara District Creative Communities granted us considerable funds, Resene donated a couple of hundred dollars of paint, OfficeMax supplied paper for the banners, Printing Plus helped with advertising materials, Mangawhai Landscape Supplies and Placemakers sorted us with rocks and gravel, Carters supplied plywood for the bird and tree cutouts, and Eagle Eye Trimming and Bill Adams delivered trees and branches on trailers from Mangawhai Hire… a big thank you to everyone.” ‘One Moonlit Night’ was opened by Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith on May 5 and will be showcased until May 13 and people are welcome to collect their painted items after the exhibit closes. |
