Following the recent exciting announcement of being granted a resource consent, members, friends, council representatives and supporters of the Mangawhai Shed Inc. gathered at the groups new ‘home’ to welcome the future building where craft, skill, laughter and friendship will be nurtured and enjoyed.

Te Uri o Hau kaumatua Ben Hita blessed the plot of land situated at Mangawhai Domain on May 29, leading a procession around the four corners of the pegged-out site to ask for protection for the coming construction and worker safety.

While welcoming the attendees, Shed chair Steve Mackay says he was humbled and excited to see so much support from the community and explained the attraction and value of the Mangawhai Shed.

“You have to ask the question why we need this shed, as most members already have one of their own, and it’s because we prefer to come together for the friendship, to share a laugh, for a shared passion of making things and to extend our skills, and we do that together,” he says.

“We support each other and we also support the wider community. There’s been many calls upon this untapped, golden reserve of skill and energy for projects, I’m not blasé about that, so I stand here with you all today and commit myself over the next few weeks to build this extraordinary shed… that’s no less that our community deserves.”

A big thank you was also given to Wood Street Four Square and Mangawhai Meat Shop for their generous donations of sausages and supplies, ‘which has allowed us to feed you all today’ and added to the celebration, ‘because that’s what this is, thank you everyone for being part of it’.

The next challenge for Shed members will be to raise enough cash to get the Shed hooked up with electricity, at a cost of $12,000.

“Which is the price for only the materials, as once again we’ve had an extraordinary offer from a local, an electrician who has offered his services free of charge for the installation,” he says. “Be nice to have some power, candles are romantic but not really effective, so if anyone has some ideas on how we can get a supply of materials, please give me a call.”

Kaipara District councillor Peter Wethey says council was really pleased to have granted $20,000 from the Mangawhai Endowment Lands Account fund to the Shed last year, and says they look forward to supporting it in the years to come.

“It’s really a proud moment especially with the Shed’s humble beginnings at Cames Road and now graduating to a purpose-built shed in this wonderful community asset of the Domain,” he says. “It’s going to be really wonderful when we have the official opening and the community will see all the hard work that everyone has put into getting the Shed to this stage, to see it come to its fruition… this is a real milestone.”
