Community Park upgrade underway

Across the road from where Phase One of the Shared Path project is kick-ing off outside ITM, another council transformation scheme involving earthmov-ing and planting is getting off the ground, and locals will soon have a chance to join in.

Just shy of a year ago af-ter Mangawhai Community Park, which stretches along Molesworth Drive from the museum to The Club, went through a major alteration with the felling of long-standing pines and tall gum trees, the site will once again become a hive of activity, although this time with plant-ing and restoration.

Following on from plant-ing around the wetlands last year, a Kaipara District Council (KDC) spokesper-son says preparations are now underway for reveg-etating the land behind the ambulance and fire station as well as around MAZ’s pump track, with a mix of native plants and grasses to enhance the existing ka-nuka area. Once this stage is completed, further plant-ing will be done to establish a kanuka forest in the space along Molesworth Drive towards Moir Point Road in-tersection and will continue up to The Club once the path development in this section is complete.

Visitors to MAZ have extra room to park now that the large sand mound, which lay between the ten-nis courts and the road, has been carved away and smoothed, allowing for an additional eight or more carpark spaces as well as improved access and vis-ibility. Contractors will also begin work on the concrete entranceway extension of MAZ’s main car park in the coming week, and the basic formation of pathways link-ing the south of the park, from MAZ towards the Museum, are already under construction.

A Community Planting Day on Saturday June 26 from 10am has also been planned by KDC’s parks team the spokesperson says, in time for Matariki, and ‘everyone is welcome’. To register your interest please email parks@kaipara.govt.nz.
