Band a good vibe for Paparoa HotelJULIA WADE Wiling away a leisurely afternoon under the blue sky with a cold drink, tasty pub food and lively music is now an attractive pastime for patrons of the Paparoa local, The Thirsty Tui. Paparoa Hotel hosted their first garden bar band on December 13 – an initiative from hotel manager Sumit Dua – in the style of Paihia husband-and-wife duet ‘Duo Coco’ aka Henare and Jane Hoani, who performed two gigs on the day, from 12-3pm and 5.30-8.30pm. “We haven't any bands before and I knew the artists personally from Bay of Islands so decided to organise an event,” Dua says. “This is something we want to do more often at the hotel, moving forward.” Formed in 2014, Duo Coco are well-known in Paihia as the resident band of Russell’s Duke of Marlborough tavern, as well as for ‘Coco Band’, their family group which includes the couple’s adult children, son Netana on drums and singer/songwriter daughter Haylee playing acoustic guitar. Entertaining with a diverse set of popular classics from Van Morrison, Pink Floyd, Amy Winehouse and Dire Straits, as well as kiwi favourites like Dragon, Herbs and Dave Dobbyn, Duo Coco’s rustic vocals and sharp guitar attracted a fair crowd of locals, travellers and motorcyclists alike to take in the outdoor ambience of the pubs sunny garden bar. “It seemed the afternoon and the evening went very well and everyone had a great time,” said Dua. “It was a great family-friendly environment, with kids playing outdoor games as well while the parents were enjoying the music and having a drink. We would love to keep doing this more often and request people to follow our facebook page to be updated with upcoming events. Thank you to everyone who came along.” ‘Duo Coco’ aka Henare and Jane Hoani, who say they never play a tune the same way twice, putting a different spin on every song. PHOTO/MEL TITO |
