MDL Civil, moving heaven and earthAn impressive display of engineering and excavation has been seen along Molesworth Drive for the last few months as the MDL Civil crew, armed with heavy machinery, prepare the site and lay foundations for the area’s new township, Mangawhai Central (MC).
Rolling into town earlier in the year, the massive multi-million dollar equipment and equally substantial land works has been an intriguing sight for many passing by. Established in 2019 and governed by Viranda Partners with multiple shareholders, the majority listed in New Zealand, MDL is ‘a full delivery partner’ employed at MC to ‘ensure maximum control over delivery of the development, including managing expectations, meeting required timelines, cost management and overall, quality assurance’. While it is unclear just how many locals are involved on site, Viranda state MDL employs a number of former Mangawhai residents who have returned home, as well as MDL staff from a South Auckland project. An imported crew, with around half living within Mangawhai, are also reportedly benefiting the local economy, as they enjoy local shops and restaurants. ‘Overall, the project is a positive contributor as far as employment and spending in the Mangawhai community is concerned’ says Viranda. More work and training opportunities at the MC site are still available for interested locals, providing candidates meet the skills and requirements of the various roles, with vacancies advertised on the MC facebook page and website as well as via a recent Heads FM radio campaign. The Mangawhai Central Sustainability Conference, postponed in March due to Covid-19, has yet to be rescheduled, although Viranda state that ongoing interest is appreciated and will inform and invite the community once a date is confirmed.
