Coastal Dreaming and Digital Transformations at Mangawhai galleryART & SOUL ‘Coastal Dreaming’ and ‘Digital Transformations’ at Mangawhai gallery Mangawhai Artists Gallery will be hosting John Ecuyer and Dr Joel Cayford from December 3 for two weeks. John has had over 30 years making objects for galleries, exhibitions, and commissions. His works have been collected by public institutions in New Zealand, Taiwan and the United States of America. He works in ceramics, cast glass and wood lathing and embellishment. This latest exhibition will include feathers, shields, mirrors and a life-size replica of a longfin eel or Tuna kuwharuwharu. This tuna piece is called ‘Coastal Dreaming’ and will be the centrepiece of his exhibition. John wishes to highlight the demise of this iconic species and make us reflect on the vital connection between the land and sea. Joel grew up in Oamaru, and, after gaining a PhD in atomic physics at Canterbury University, worked in London first as a systems analyst, then in interactive communications design, and finally in educational publishing. After returning to NZ in 1991 Joel got involved in politics. He was a Councillor in Auckland, chaired ARC’s Auckland Regional Land Transport Committee, and involved himself in the planning of Auckland’s redeveloping waterfront and port until 2010. Joel is currently building a house at Mangawhai Point and is actively involved with Mangawhai Matters Inc, helping community members with Kaipara matters including Mangawhai Central, and rates issues. From an early age Joel was interested in photography – inspired by his father’s interest. He has an extensive negative collection dating back to the 1970’s and he has ‘mined’ them and selected images for digital rendering and printing onto high quality permanent, weather-proof PVC backings for this exhibition. His subject matter ranges from findings in life, portraits, and constructed settings that express his feelings about the world and what happens in life. Joel has developed a recent range of Mangawhai surf beach images set in corrugated iron, with cut out stencil texts. Several of these will also be exhibited. § Mangawhai Artists Gallery is located at 45 Moir St – the artists look forward to welcoming you.
