AGM ushers in officers and 90th anniversary year

Tomarta RFC Inc senior team 1958-59-624
Tomarata RFC Inc has elected office holders for the 2016 season and 90th anniversary year of the club at their AGM held at the clubrooms on Tuesday December 1.

Office holders are: Patron Alec McQuarrie; President Gel Atkins; Vice President Gordon Fox; Secretary Dave Donnelly; Treasurer Robert Scott; Club Captain Dave Korach; Senior Coach Joe Harding; Junior Rugby Edwina Came and Michelle Keats; Northland Delegates Alec McQuarrie, Gel Atkins and Peter Burnside.

Tony Lenssen is groundsman and Rosa Vakatini bar manager.

Next season will see the club celebrate its 90th anniversary having been formed back in 1926 when the club played under the name of 'United' until 1935 when it went into recess.

The
club reformed again in 1939 playing at the Tomarata Domain for two years, reemerging in 1945 and adopting its current name Tomarata.

The club's colours were dark blue jerseys with black shorts.

After the war the club played at a variety of sites around the Tomarata district including the Tomarata Domain, Mick Grey's farm, and Bill Logue's farm to the early 1960s, then obtained its current fields in 1962.

The clubrooms were completed in 1966.

Tomarata played in a comprehensive local Rodney-based competition, winning the coveted ‘Triple Crown’ of Rodney rugby – the EL Smith Trophy, the Becroft Trophy, and the
long standing Govan Wilson Trophy – in the early 60s.

The 1970s saw a strong period in Rodney rugby where the club regularly fielded two senior teams in an all-local competition that sometimes saw up to nine local clubs competing.

But by the late 80s Tomarata was back in
recess, largely due the rise of the North Habour union that saw lower Rodney clubs merge and head south whilst the
northern Rodney clubs joined forces and entered the Whangarei competition.

By 1991 Tomarata re-emerged
to play in the Northland third divsion competition, and these days competes in the Northland RFU Second Division competition spread over the
lower half of the Northland province, playing as far afield as Pipiwai and Kaihu.

In both 2013 and 2014 Tomarata
were the losing finalists in the nine team Northland Second Division competition.

Tomarata remains a keen supporter of children's rugby with the club sometimes fielding up to five junior sides and drawing good support from the Tomarata and Mangawhai district.

The club intends to hold 90th Jubilee celebrations later next year to commemorate the milestone. More information about the club's history can be found at tomarata.co.nz.
