Kaiwaka centre a community affair

The Kaiwaka Drop In Centre opened as a Kaiwaka Care’s initiative in July this year.

Based in the lounge at Kate’s Place opposite the Cheese Shop on SH1, the centre is open to all as a place to meet, share resources, teach, learn, have a cuppa, eat, use the wi-fi or the printer, listen or be listened to, in fact whatever is needed by the community.

Ewan King from the Wood Street Freehouse spoke about his new establishment in Mangawhai. A freehouse, explains Ewan, is a place for community to come together, eat and drink.

Ewan was born in Canada and raised in New Zealand. He went to university in the USA at age 16 and on to Europe at 18 to pick grapes and then bartended for the next 10 years.

Time running out for flag referendum

The Electoral Commission is reminding voters that time is running out to take part in the first referendum on the New Zealand flag.

“To have your say in the referendum you need to make sure you’ve received, completed and sent back your voting paper before voting closes,” says Robert Peden, Chief Electoral Officer.

Try stand up paddle board for free

Aotearoa Surf is hosting a free stand up paddle (SUP) community event for kids in the Mangawhai Harbour.

Aotearoa Surf’s Che Burnett is opening the sport up to children that may not get an opportunity to try stand up paddle boarding and this event allows the community to come together.

 

 
 

Auction house gets finishing touches

A big summer fundraiser for the Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ) is taking shape with the My Pad-built charity auction home almost complete.

Contractors and supporters were recently treated to drinks and nibbles and an inspection of the home.
