Bargain books always popularWhile there are a growing number of people going online for information, entertainment and enjoyment, the digital age is still shunned by many who prefer the feel of pre-loved books for their evening reading. This was no less evident at the Mangawhai Museum Book Fair held on Labour Weekend which attracted, as usual, a large number of visitors of all ages with thousands of books available to satisfy any appetite, from children’s stories to classics, and which raised more than $3000. Museum manager Emma Gray admits it is a major job for up to ten volunteers to set up and sort books into their various categories and then stack the leftovers away again after, but there is considerable satisfaction in both the funds gained and also the pleasure of buyers finding special gems among the horde. Like perpetual motion, and given that most can be bought with small change, a large percentage regularly find themselves circulating from book fair to book fair, again providing ample evidence that despite the well-fingered pages and multitude of dog-eared corners, a good read still remains a good read. |
