Community embraces winter swimMore than 40 foolhardy souls braved the elements to celebrate the winter solstice with a dip in the ocean on Sunday June 21. The ‘shortest day’ started with rain but a short reprieve enabled mums, dads, kids and friends to dash into the surf to mark the countdown to summer. The surprisingly warm water temperature of 16 degrees saw many enjoying the surf for several minutes, before being coaxed out of the water as the tide started to turn. “A mid-winter swim is a wonderful way to show our appreciation for the beautiful ocean that is on our doorstep,” said Belinda Vernon, one of the organisers of the swim. “Last year the mid-winter swim attracted about a dozen people. The turnout this year was amazing, particularly given the rainy conditions. Big thanks to the surf club for opening their doors and providing shelter beforehand and warm drinks and chocolate cake afterwards!” PHOTO/SUPPLIED |
